ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Rochester Family Mission is seeing a rise in visitors as it gears up for its Christmas basket food giveaway.
Brenda Warren, who has a full-time job, shared her struggles with balancing the cost of living during a visit to the pantry.
“The battle is either I’m going to pay rent and pay gas, electric, or I’m going to get food,” she said.
Earlier this year, the pantry supported Warren when she couldn’t work after a fall.
“At that time, my funds that was coming in was just allocated to paying bills, not saying that we were starving, but my brother, who used to help out here, he told us about it and we started coming here during the summertime,” she said.
Currently, the pantry assists at least 1,000 families each month, and it will be supporting even more this weekend. Executive Director Warren Meeks Jr. is preparing for the Christmas basket giveaway on Saturday.
“We set up all of our baskets, set up everything, and get it into a rotation for when the cars come through,” Meeks Jr. said.
Donations are vital, and Meeks Jr. noted the growing number of visitors.
“A lot more people are donating, which is helping us to be able to sustain and be able to provide for all the people that come through the mission,” he said.
Brenda Warren is repaying the kindness. She is giving back by delivering food from the pantry to families without transportation.
“You got the means, the transportation, even a foothold to get them feet moving and get out there — get out there,” she said. “Help somebody pay it forward, as they say.”
