Last week, we learned that Nico Hoerner’s name had popped up in trade conversations this offseason, though it was non-specific and certainly not a situation where it had the feel of Hoerner being shopped or anything like that.
More likely, we figured, the Cubs were having conversations with LOTS of teams about LOTS of topics, and given how hot the second base trade market is (and the lack of shortstops out there), it would make sense for a team or three to ask the Cubs about Hoerner. He’s a free agent after next season, plus the Cubs might sign a third baseman (which could ultimately make Matt Shaw available to play second base if and when Hoerner ever departed). So, yes, you listen. You see if some team wants to do something absolutely crazy. And then other teams (and/or the Cubs) use that chatter to stir up leverage in other areas. It’s not nothing, but it’s not like we felt a Hoerner trade was all that plausible, let alone likely.
I still don’t think a Nico Hoerner trade is anything close to “likely,” but this does give the whole situation a little more clarity:
Will Giants add a second baseman? Nico Hoerner among players they’re eyeing; a look at other possibilities and what happens to Casey Schmitt in such a scenario t.co/f7rITBY6um via @sfchronicle
— Susan Slusser (@susanslusser) December 17, 2025“The Chronicle has learned the Giants have checked in on former Stanford shortstop Nico Hoerner, who’s from Oakland …. Hoerner, too, can play almost anywhere, but since moving from shortstop to primarily second base in 2023, he’s won two Gold Gloves. He also led the Cubs in bWAR last year, at 6.2, hitting .297 with 29 steals, so he’s not coming cheap, even for one season. For the defense-prioritizing Giants, though, he might be the best fit — particularly if the team can’t corral a standout outfielder. He’s 28, and with his Bay Area ties could be an excellent candidate for a contract extension if acquired.”
The article, it should be noted, is about all kinds of positional possibilities for the Giants, of which Hoerner is just one player mentioned. It should also be noted that this is not a report about active trade talks, or about the Cubs affirmatively going out there and trying to find a deal for Hoerner. Instead, it’s about a team thinking through its options, seeing a possible trade target with a geographic fit and possible extension opportunity. If I were the Giants, I would absolutely be reaching out to the Cubs on Nico Hoerner right now!
Feels like that’s probably as far as it goes, though.
Is there a version of this where trading Nico Hoerner could actually make sense for the Cubs? Sure, I can stretch and come up with it. Basically it would require all of the following:
1.) The Cubs believe they cannot extend/re-sign Hoerner after 2026;
2.) Hoerner’s value in a trade to the Giants (or some other club) is so massively enormous that the Cubs can magically transform their farm system in one fell swoop;
3.) The Cubs believe Matt Shaw is best-suited for second base and will shockingly approach Hoerner’s total projected value in 2026; and
4.) The Cubs know they are landing one of the third baseman in free agency, preferably Alex Bregman.
If all of those things were true, then, OK, yes, it makes a lot of on-paper sense to consider a trade (and there’s a bit of a sliding scale on all of them). But really think about each of those items, and then think about how reasonable it is to expect all of them to be true. Because otherwise, it makes the most sense to keep one of your best players, let him help you win in 2026, and then evaluate the situation going forward as he approaches free agency.
It all just strikes me as fairly unlikely. What seems far more likely is that the Giants are simply doing what they should be doing, and working through all possible options for improving their team. And the Cubs, for their part, are simply doing what they should be doing: listening, on the freak possibility that the Giants want to do something stupid.
