BRIGHTON, N.Y. — The Brighton Police Department has increased its presence at places of worship more than usual this holiday season.
Officers on patrol have been stopping at places of worship between calls for service. This includes completing reports at these locations and going inside to introduce themselves or say hello, ensuring their presence is known.
The effort to increase security began after the attack at Bondi Beach, officials said.
“We communicate with whether it’s the rabbi, the priest, whatever the denomination is, we have good communication and a good relationship,” Brighton police Lt. Allison Laubacher said. “So if there is an issue they can call us or just to put a face to the name.”
Laubacher said the department immediately started increasing patrols after hearing about the attack in Australia. The increased patrols are discussed in meetings at the police department and then communicated to officers on road patrol.
The Brighton Police Department said there is no credible threat to places of worship at this time. The increased patrols are out of an abundance of caution.
Rabbi Moshe Vogel said he is in contact with local and state police. He will have the help of Brighton police, which increases its presence at public events, especially during the holidays.
“That initial fear is to withdraw. Make sure, you know, keep a low profile,” Vogel said. “And, we had to gather ourselves and say that would be the exact opposite of what Hanukkah means.”
Brighton police officers conduct additional checks by walking around and inside the buildings.
“I like to do that just to reassure the community, to reassure people that it’s safe to attend. And a visible presence goes a very long way into turning anyone or any group that may be wishing to do harm,” said Police Chief David Catholdi.
Catholdi said these efforts go a long way in reassuring people that they are safe. Vogel added that he is making sure he has all proper security to move forward with his Hanukkah events, which he said is crucial for shining more light on the holiday.
