Giants Reportedly Signing Adrian Houser to a Two-Year Deal ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

We haven’t seen a ton of movement in this tier of the starting pitcher/swing-man market, so I find this to be a particularly interesting signing.

Adrian Houser is going to the Giants for a pretty penny:

Right-hander Adrian Houser and the San Francisco Giants are in agreement on a two-year, $22 million contract with a club option for a third year, sources tell ESPN. Between the signing of Jason Foley and the addition of Houser, the Giants are shoring up their pitching staff.

You may remember that Houser, 33, was a long-time effective swing-man with the Brewers and Craig Counsell, before things fell off for him in 2022-24. He actually briefly spent time in the Cubs organization at Iowa in 2024, but never got back to the big leagues with the Cubs.

From there, though, he reinvented himself and broke back out in a big way in 2025 with the White Sox, so much so that he became a pretty desirable trade candidate (eventually going to the Rays).

Against that backdrop, I’m not surprised he got a two-year deal, but I didn’t quite expect him to see an AAV at this level. The Giants clearly have a lot of believe in the corner he turned last year, and that, even after his numbers kinda sunk with the Rays, he’ll at least be a league-average pitcher in 2026. We’ll see if this is a one-off, or if this is going to be the rate for guys who can swing in and out of the rotation, might be average-ish with the potential to be a touch better. I’m not sure whether the Cubs will ultimately be in that market – it may just be reliever(s) and one front-half starter for them – but it’s still interesting.

Speaking of that, the Giants weren’t attached to most of the top starting pitchers, and, even if they were, I don’t know that this Houser deal would take them out. But if they were an edge case, maybe they’ve simply decided none of the top starters is going to be a price fit for them, and they’ve moved on? It would be nice to know that the Giants aren’t involved on Tatsuya Imai, for example.
