Some of Snider’s friends delved further into the tale involving Snider and Brooks on a recent episode of Rolling Stone’s Nashville Nowpodcast, hosted by Joseph Hudak. During the episode Hudak noted that country star Gary Allan also cut a version of “Alright Guy” in 2001 and it served as the title track for his album released that same year, although Allan changed a few of the lyrics to make it more accessible to his fans.
Although Snider’s song didn’t make the cut, Brooks did go on to release the album Garth Brooks In…the Life of Chris Gains in 1999. It featured the country star adopting the Gaines persona to record more rock-oriented material away from his usual country wheelhouse.
Brooks, however, did assume the character of Gaines--who sported long bangs and a soul patch--for a VH1 Behind the Music and appeared as Gaines as the musical guest on an episode of Saturday Night Live, which he hosted as himself. Although some mocked the project, it was a commercial success. The album reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and went on to achieve double-platinum status in the U.S. for sales of 2 million copies and it spawned the top 10 single “Lost in You.”
