Maya Hetland, who lives in Newark, California, and trains at Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics in the DKS group, has committed to Arizona State University for 2026-27. At the time of her commitment last fall, she wrote on social media:
“I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Arizona State University!! I want to express my gratitude towards Coach Herbie and the ASU coaching staff as well as my family and friends. Couldn’t have done it without you all!!! I can’t wait for my next chapter as a Sun Devil! FORKS UP”
Hetland specializes in butterfly and IM and was one of the “Best of the Rest” recruits on our list of top girls swimmers from the high school class of 2026. She represents Norway internationally and participated in the 2025 LEN European Junior Championships this past summer. She swam the 200 back (34th in prelims with a PB of 2:20.61), 100 fly (37th in prelims, 1:02.35), 200 fly (15th in semis with 2:17.62), 200 IM (30th in prelims, 2:21.80), and 400 IM (32nd in prelims, PB of 5:03.55).
She achieved her best LCM times three weeks later at Sacramento Futures, where she was runner-up in the 100/200 fly and 200/400 IM. She left the meet with PBs in the 100 free (58.20), 200 free (2:05.67), 200 fly (2:15.26), 200 IM (2:17.55), and 400 IM (4:52.06).
Hetland kicked off the 2025-26 short-course season with PBs in the 200 free (1:49.34, -2.5 seconds) and 100 fly (53.63, -.7 second) at the Joyce Lanphere Invitational. Last weekend, at Winter Juniors West, she lowered her lifetime bests in the 100 free (51.22), 200 fly (1:57.04), 200 IM (1:58.78), and 400 IM (4:13.29) while placing 4th in the 200 fly final, 5th in the 200 IM, and 9th in the 400 IM.
