An armed suspect killed himself Sunday after an eight-hour standoff with Greeley police officers.
At approximately 8:35 a.m. Sunday, Greeley police responded to a call about a disturbance with a gun in the 4700 block of 29th Street, according to a Greeley Police Department news release Sunday evening. A woman reported that the 53-year-old male suspect who was armed with a shotgun had entered her home and assaulted her. The woman was able to escape the home before officers arrived.
The man barricaded himself inside the home. At 9:05 a.m., a Reverse 911 text was sent to neighbors in a three-block radius surrounding the incident, advising them to shelter in place. While the suspect initially engaged in conversation with the Crisis Negotiation Unit, he later stopped all contact.
A search warrant was issued and the Greeley Police Department’s SWAT team tried to get the man to surrender. When the team entered the home, they found the man, who had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The news release did not specify what time the man shot himself. The Reverse 911 was canceled at approximately 5 p.m.No further information about the incident will be released on Monday, and the name of the suspect will be released by the Weld County Coroner’s Office following notification of next of kin.
