What Rob Reiner Told ‘All in the Family’ Guest Star Before the Famous ‘Draft Dodger’ Christmas Episode ...Saudi Arabia

News by : (Parade) -

Temple played the best friend of Reiner’s character, Mike “Meathead” Stivic, in the 1976 All in the Family Christmas episode, "The Draft Dodger." In the episode, Temple’s character, David Brewster,  is invited to the Bunker family Christmas Eve dinner, but patriarch Archie (Carroll O’Connor) explodes when he finds out that Brewster is a draft dodger alongside the guest of honor, Archie's friend Pinky Peterson (Eugene Roche), a gold star father whose son, Steve, was killed in Vietnam. The episode was one of the most powerful from All in the Family’s nine-season run.

“It was really, you know, at the time it was absolutely terrifying, it was my first TV show,” Temple said. “Now I’m actually playing a draft dodger who comes home and has Christmas dinner with the Bunkers because I’m an old friend of Mike Stivic, Rob Reiner.”

Temple shared how Reiner and O’Connor worked behind the scenes to make sure the audience laughed in the "right places” during filming for the CBSsitcom.

The actor noted that Reiner and O’Connor changed things around “a number of times” during rehearsals, so he finally asked Reiner what they were doing.

“And so it was a very careful dance they were doing with the Archie Bunker character to make sure that we knew that as genuine as this character was, as flawed as this character was, basically a nice guy kind of he was, you know, this family guy this hardworking blue-collar guy, that when it came to politics and bigotry and racism and all of that stuff that he wasn't right. So they wanted to make sure the crowd didn't laugh and applaud at the wrong places,” Temple explained.

“After we’d do our shows, we’d go out to dinner every week. And I’d always look forward to that, because aside from being a great actor, he was a really smart guy, and he had great thoughts about the world and politics and whatever social issues we were dealing with," Reiner recalled. “Whatever we all felt—whether it was the Vietnam War or race issues or women’s issues—those things got into the show, and he was part of creating that freedom."
