The first quarter of this one was…something. The Chicago Bulls didn’t exactly come out of the gates on fire. They shot 11-30 from the field, 4-16 from three, didn’t get to the free-throw line, and scored just 26 points. Yet, when the first 12 minutes were done, the Bulls led 26-21. The Bulls were fine defensively. New Orleans turned the ball over four times in the opening frame, and Chicago won the rebounding battle 16-12.
In the second quarter, the offensive struggles intensified for Chicago, but that wasn’t the case for New Orleans. The Bulls shot just 6-20 from the field and 2-13 from deep in the second frame, while the Pelicans bounced back and put up 31 points. At the half, it was a 52-47 lead for New Orleans.
It was a little frustrating to me to see Nikola Vucevic get so much playing time again, yet continue to struggle. I like Vooch a lot, and he’s been a very good player in the NBA, but he just hasn’t been playing very well lately. The Bulls have two younger big men on the bench who have both shown signs of promise. Both played really well down the stretch against Charlotte on the way to the win on Friday night, yet in this one, Vooch led the team in minutes through the first three quarters despite shooting just 2-11 from the field and 0-4 from three.
Though while Vooch struggled, the Bulls finally strung together the big run they needed to close out the third quarter. Trailing 72-59, Josh Giddey went on a 7-0 run of his own to cut the Pelicans’ lead to 72-66, then, after a Dalen Terry three to make it 72-69, Coby White scored six straight points. All of a sudden, after sleepwalking through the first 2.5 quarters of basketball, the Bulls trailed just 76-75 heading into the final frame.
To start the fourth, Chicago got out to an 81-78 lead to get themselves back out in front. But following that, New Orleans went on a 26-10 run of their own. This one felt all too familiar. Every time the Bulls grabbed some momentum and had a chance to further a run, they’d miss the opportunity, and momentum would swing back the other way.
Usually, holding a team to a 24% mark from three is good enough to win. But the problem was that Billy Donovan’s team was as bad themselves from beyond the arc, shooting only 27%. The Bulls failed to score 30+ points in any of the four quarters tonight; that’s a problem, especially in today’s NBA. Another key stat – the Bulls got outrebounded 64-48. Just not good enough to win.
Another low-energy loss against a bad team. A story that’s become all too familiar with this year’s Bulls team.
