Generally speaking, I understand the idea behind the trade, as the Brewers are able to cash in on a later-career breakout from Collins for an optionable reliever with apparently good stuff (good fastball and LOADS of groundballs). But … I thought Isaac Collins was pretty good AND Nick Mears has value, too. And that makes me scratch my head a bit.
2026 stats:
Mears: 56.2 IP, 3.49 ERA Zerpa: 64.2 IP, 4.18 ERA Collins: .263/.368/.411 (122 wRC+); 2.6 WARAs Rosenthal mentioned, Zerpa does have an option year remaining and one more year of control than Mears, but is that really worth two years of Mears, 29, and five years of Collins from ages 28-32? I don’t know. Feels odd unless there’s some other corresponding move coming. Or, of course, the obvious happens and Zerpa becomes an absolute FREAK reliever for the Brewers, tormenting us throughout his time in Milwaukee.
I suppose there’s also the fact that, as a smaller market team, the Brewers have to be constantly cashing in on breakouts whenever they happen. It’s one of the ways they’re able to keep restocking their system with talent, and they’ve had plenty of success doing that for years.
With that said, Isaac Collins was penciled in as their Opening Day right fielder, even though ZiPS is projecting a very significant step back next season: .229/.328/.365 (1.3 WAR).
