Four-star quarterback Weston Nielsen announced his commitment to Arizona State’s 2027 class on Saturday.
The 6-foot-1, 180-pound Nielsen is the No. 13 quarterback and No. 211 overall prospect in 2027, according to 247 Sports. He joins wide receiver Nico Bland (No. 13 WR, No. 96 overall) as ASU’s two early commitments in the 2027 class.
Nielsen’s commitment comes after reports indicated Kenny Dillingham was nearing an amended contract agreement with ASU despite reported interest from Michigan.
Oregon, SMU, Texas A&M and Big 12 foes Arizona, Texas Tech and TCU were among Nielsen’s other suitors.
He hails from Bastrop High School in Texas, where as a junior he racked up 3,053 yards (65.8%), 44 touchdowns and six interceptions through the air. He also rushed for 373 yards and five touchdowns on 40 carries.
247 Sports’ Gabe Brooks writes:
Adequate height with a lean, wiry build that should be able to add more mass in the next couple of years. Strong athletic profile that includes respectable combine testing numbers, basketball participation and promising track and field data, including a 6-2 high jump.
Manages the pocket well. Good presence/awareness with the capability to make subtle, measured adjustments vs. late rushers to find space and deliver off-platform throws. Also a capable passer when rolling out. Displays good touch to multiple levels. Also shows above average velocity to the intermediate level, particularly over the middle of the field.
May not possess the high-end physical upside of some QB peers in the cycle. Nevertheless, a talented, highly competent quarterback prospect with high-floor effectiveness and the athletic profile to suggest some developmental potential. Projects as a P4-caliber QB who could become a quality multi-year starter.
How Weston Nielsen fits into ASU’s QB outlook
ASU has options for how they will proceed after Sam Leavitt, and the ripple effects of that decision would likely impact Nielsen.
All indications are the 2026 quarterback job will come down to two (or three) candidates.
Cameron Dyer, the No. 141 prospect in the 2025 class, will be a redshirt freshman who has limited practice reps since getting cleared from an ACL injury he suffered during the New Mexico high school playoffs.
He was initially expected to transition to wide receiver, but he’s been practicing with the quarterbacks since he arrived in Tempe.
Jake Fette, ranked No. 105 in 2026, could challenge Dyer for depth chart positioning as a true freshman who has earned heaps of national praise.
There’s also the transfer portal options, which could present a stop-gap quarterback, akin to Oklahoma nabbing John Mateer out of Washington State for this fall.
ASU also prioritized Gilbert Perry quarterback Kael Snyder in the 2027 class, awarding him with one of six Golden Tickets, which denote top local targets. He committed to Boise State in October and cited the Broncos only offering one 2027 quarterback as a big reason they were his choice.
