The city of Greeley has begun searching for a new public works director following the departure of Paul Trombino on Dec. 1 after four years of service.
Trombino joined the city as public works director in 2021, following his time as director and Homeland Security advisor for the state of Iowa. During his tenure in Greeley, he was at the forefront of many city projects, such as the Greeley-Weld County Airport improvement project, the Mobility Expansion for Regional Growth and Equity program and his work with the Catalyst project, which will soon face a citywide vote relating to a zoning ordinance passed by council earlier this year.
“Paul Trombino has been a tremendous asset to the city,” Acting City Manager Brian McBroom said. “We are grateful for his technical expertise and leadership of daily operations and the many infrastructure projects he championed, including the Mobility Expansion for Regional Growth and Equity (MERGE) program and the Greeley-Weld County Airport expansion. His contributions in his time with us have well-positioned our organization and our community for future growth.”
In addition to those contributions, Trombino is credited with beginning the process for new stormwater improvements, a $500 million investment to address aging infrastructure and increase the city’s capacity to handle storms. He was also responsible for recruiting Alquist 3D, which performs 3D printing for buildings and partners with the Greeley-Weld Habitat for Humanity on the Hope Springs project.
Trombino’s salary at the time of his departure was $228,800, according to Greeley Public Information Officer Kim Kappel. The city would not provide a reason for Trombino’s departure, stating only that it was a personnel matter and that no further details could be provided.
The city’s posted job description says whoever the new director is will be responsible for managing the large city projects currently underway and securing funding while maintaining communication across many city departments. The anticipated salary range for the position is between $161,900 and $198,350, with a maximum salary of $234,800, depending on the candidate’s experience.
The median income for Greeley residents is about $76,462, according to 2024 census data.
The city plans to hire a new director quickly to continue Trombino’s work, with no plans for an interim director. The city’s deputy public works director, Will Jones, is set to become Loveland’s next public works director starting Jan. 12.
The city of Greeley is also conducting a search for a new city manager following Raymond Lee’s resignation from the city’s top position. Lee on Wednesday was named the next city administrator of Portland, Oregon.
