Greeley’s oldest high school, Greeley Central/Greeley High, will induct its fourth athletic Hall of Fame class in between the girls and boys varsity basketball games at about 6:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19 at Jim Baggot Gymnasium.
There will also be displays for each of the eight inductees, as well as a meet-and-greet, in the Greeley Central cafeteria, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
This year’s inductees are Jack Mashburn (basketball, football), the 1936 wrestling state champions, Paul Moloney (Greeley Tribune), Richard Hillway (tennis), Rod Bates (basketball), Jaime Clark (multiple sports), Jamie Robinson (swimming) and the 2000 girls cross country state champions.
Jack Mashburn, football and basketball (1921-25)
Mashburn was an all-state right end and an all-state guard for some of the most talented football and basketball teams in school history. He helped lead Greeley Central to a football state title, as it defeated La Junta 35-7 on Dec. 6, 1924, capping a 10-0 season.
He also led the Wildcats to their third state basketball title in five years, in 1925.
Mashburn went on to star in football, basketball and baseball for four years at Colorado Teacher’s College, now the University of Northern Colorado.

Led by the likes of Clarence “Hap” Stevens, Vernon Erickson, Harold Whitehouse, Ray Kruse, Willard Noell and Lloyd Oliver, the Wildcats won the school’s first and only state wrestling championship in the program’s first year.
It was also the first Colorado High School Activities Association-sponsored state wrestling tournament, taking place in Greeley’s Gunter Hall. That inaugural state tournament featured nine schools and 45 total wrestlers.
Erickson, Whitehouse and Stevens each won individual titles for Greeley Central, as the Wildcats won the tournament with 32 points.
Paul Moloney, photographer, sports writer, editor (1956-81)
At its mid-1900s peak, Greeley High’s athletic excellence was well-documented in the pages of the Greeley Tribune.
Moloney stood at the heart of the Tribune’s extensive coverage.
Moloney made a profound impact on the lives of the thousands of Greeley High/Greeley Central athletes he covered during his two and a half decades of award-winning sports journalism and his five-plus decades of mentorship in the photography field.
For many years, his photography not only captured many of the Wildcat’s finest moments in the Tribune, he often lent his work to the school’s annual “Spud”.
Also, in 1959, Moloney assisted in publishing legendary Greeley High coach and 2022 Hall of Fame inductee Jim Baggot’s book, “Pressing Defense and Fast Break Basketball”.

Richard’s parents, Tyrus and Hazel, moved the family from West Hartford, Connecticut, to Greeley in 1951, because doctors told Richard’s parents they needed to move him to a drier climate to combat the severe asthma Richard battled as a child.
Hillway would proceed to spend the next decade rapidly working his way up the tennis ranks in Greeley, racking up countless titles in the process.
He began his high school career in 1958. That first year of high school, Hillway teamed with longtime tennis partner Harry Hinzelman to win a doubles state title, leading the Wildcats to a third-place team finish in the state tournament.
Hillway won a No. 1 singles title the next year, in 1959, helping Greeley to a team championship. He repeated as state champion a year later, as the Wildcats fell one point shy of repeating as team champion.
Rod Bates, basketball and baseball (1964-67)
Bates was a rapid riser on the basketball court after beginning his high school career as a sophomore on the junior varsity squad in 1964-65.
As a junior on the Wildcats’ varsity squad in ’65-66, Bates led the conference in scoring, averaging 21.2 points per game. Greeley Central went 17-4 that year and finished fourth in the state tournament. Also, during his junior year of high school, Bates went 6-0 as a pitcher on the Wildcats’ baseball team, which finished second in the Northern Conference.
During his senior year, Bates helped lead Greeley Central to a conference title, again placing fourth in the state tournament. Bates averaged 22 points per game and he was one of only two players unanimously selected to the 1967 Sports Writers All-Northern Conference Basketball Team. He was also named to the All-State Tournament Team for the second year in a row.
He capped off his accolades by becoming the second of four Wildcats basketball players to be named a high school All-American.
He became the school’s all-time leading scorer, averaging 19.7 points per game over 46 varsity games. He was also named to the All-Northern Conference baseball team with an 8-2 record as a pitcher during his senior year.
Jaime Clark, volleyball, basketball, soccer, tennis and track and field (1992-96)
Clark didn’t exactly have a surplus of free time during her high school career. To this day, she remains Greeley Central’s only five-sport athlete.
She was an all-Northern Conference performer in four of her five sports, an all-state honoree in three sports and a state champion in one.
She also earned the prestigious Boettcher scholarship for her fine performance in the classroom.
Clark won a No. 2 singles tennis state title as a sophomore, defeating Poudre’s Andrea Moses in a dramatic three-set finals match.
She also helped lead the Wildcats to a runner-up finish in the team standings.

Robinson was a consistent, and dominant, force in the pool, setting eight school records and earning numerous spots on all-conference and all-state teams.
She also, ultimately, claimed two state titles.
All was a precursor to having a record-setting collegiate swimming career at Texas Christian University and Colorado State.
Following a series of high finishes in the state meet the previous two years, Robinson finally topped the podium as a junior in 1998 when she controlled the final 50 yards to claim the Class 5A 200-yard individual medley team. She defeated defending state champion Lisa Garcia of Cherry Creek to claim that championship.
Her time (2:07.59) was a personal and school record.
She won a second state title that season, recording another personal and school record in the 100 breaststroke (1:04.89), coming within .30 of a state record.
Robinson was the first Wildcats swimmer in program history to win two titles in one year.
2000 girls cross country state champions
In the fall of 2000, the Wildcats’ student body returned to their building on 14 Avenue and 15th Street after a one-year stay in the building that is now known as Northridge High School, as Greeley Central’s building was renovated.
Coach “Woody” Wilson helped guide his program to a history-making campaign.
The Wildcats became the first and only Greeley Central team to win a girls cross country team state championship.
After the Wildcats placed third in the state meet the previous year in 1999, senior Annie Bersagel provided quiet leadership by example during the fall of 2000. Fellow senior Breanne Shupe had more of an energetic, outgoing leadership style.
The duo was joined by junior Ashley Martinez, sophomore Tori Carter, junior Kaylee Yago, freshman Kelly Hertneky and freshman Colleen Reilly.
Battling through a tough regular season schedule and overcoming a daunting state meet field, three of Greeley Central’s runners placed in the top 20, individually, including Bersagel, who was second, overall. The Wildcats won the team title with a score of 87 points.
