Kansas City Royals Signing Third Baseman Maikel Garcia to an Extension ...Middle East

It’s an atypical time for extensions, but that doesn’t mean we won’t see some of them this month. And the ones we do see could potentially impact the market, insofar as they affect budgets or long-term plans.

Not sure this one falls into those categories, but it’s a notable deal nonetheless. Breakout Royals third baseman Maikel Garcia is getting an extension:

Maikel Garcia's five-year contract extension is worth a guaranteed $57.5 million, source tells t.co/Ivs9s9EIaV, though the club option and escalators in the deal can get it into the $85 million range.

Garcia, 25, erupted in 2025 to the tune of a .286/.351/.449/121 wRC+ slash line, the best peripherals of his career, stellar defense, and a whopping 5.6 WAR. He was quietly one of the most valuable position players in baseball.

So the Royals jump on the opportunity to sign him long-term for relatively little risk, at $57.5 million guaranteed. For that, they get his first free agent year and a team option for a second year, all through his age-31 season. Sure hope that team option is pricey, for Garcia’s sake.

Which isn’t to say I don’t understand why guys take these deals. Because Garcia struggled a bit in his first few cracks at the big leagues, his first go at arbitration projected to earn him under $5 million, despite the monster 2025 season. He was getting four arb trips, but it’s possible he would’ve netted only $30 million or so thereafter through that process, assuming he continued to play well and was tendered every year. So he locks that part down, and theoretically gets a healthy price on the free agent year he’s giving up. Of course, the risk is that he repeats his 2025 season multiple times over, and could have hit the open market ahead of his age-30 season and could have landed a deal worth $300 million or more. Long way between now and then, though.

As far as offseason implications go, it’s possible that with some longer-term financial certainty in place, the Royals will feel comfortable getting more aggressive to build out their roster in the near-term. It’s also possible that, having seen what prices were out there in free agency, the Royals decided to reallocate some near-term funds to getting this Garcia deal locked down in the first place.

In any case, together with Bobby Witt Jr., the Royals now have the left side of their infield locked down through the end of the decade, and dang, it’s a very good left side of the infield.
