Sonora, CA — The Sonora High Wildcats football team left for Southern California early this morning ahead of Saturday’s game against Rio Hondo.
Supporters gathered at Courthouse Park to cheer the student athletes on as the bus traveled through downtown. The game is garnering a high level of interest as it is a battle of elite, unbeaten, smaller schools. Related to the trip, the Sonora Area Foundation reports that the community far exceeded the $10,000 matching offer. SAF CEO Darrell Slocum reports that the foundation will be sending $38,565 to Sonora High to support costs associated with the state championship game. A total of 75 donations were received from SAF donors and the community. Some handed $20 in cash, and notable business donations came from Black Oak Casino Resort ($1,500), Leavitt Insurance Services ($3,000), and Nate’s Tree Service ($5,000). 100% of the money will go to Sonora High School.
Sonora High will also be transporting the band and cheerleaders to the game, and they will be departing early Saturday morning.
