ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The holiday season is here. There are so many holiday festivities and other events happening around the Rochester area on Friday and this weekend. Here is your guide.

Roc Holiday Village (through Sunday, Dec. 28)

Roc Holiday Village is in full swing at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park in downtown Rochester. The seventh annual holiday celebration includes shopping, ice skating, visits with Santa, food, and more.

The free holiday village will stay open on Wednesdays through Sundays, except for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, through Sunday, Dec. 28. It’s closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. So much is happening at the village each day. You can see a full schedule of events here. Here’s what’s in store for this week:

Thursday

Stella Artois Engraving: Stella Artois is holding a free chalice engraving at the Triple-O Lodge bar, allowing people to create a custom keepsake. It runs from 7 to 9 p.m. Silent Disco: People can dance to the beat of their own music at the MLK Park ice rink for Silent Disco. You can grab a pair of wireless headphones, choose your favorite music channel, and skate for free. In addition, Dick’s House of Sport will host a pop-up event with giveaways under a tent next to the ice rink. It runs from 8 to 10 p.m. on Thursdays, Dec. 11 and Dec. 18. Trivia Night: WeTheHobby Sports and GameNightRoc are hosting a free sports trivia night at the Gingerbread House. You can put your knowledge of sports stats, iconic plays, and underdog stories to the test. Beer, wine, hard cider, canned cocktails, and non-alcoholic beverages will be available to buy. It runs from 8:30 to 10 p.m.

Friday

Bar Tasting: Resurgence Brewing Company is holding a bar tasting from 6 to 8 p.m., which includes its seasonal favorite, Sour Claus. It’s happening at the Triple-O Lodge. Live Music: The band Beggars Will Ride are set to perform festive music at the Simcona Stage from 8 to 11 p.m. The band began as a father-son duo with saxophonist Danny Mark and has since grown into a full band with drums and bass. Trivia Night: The Gingerbread House is holding a free trivia night from 8:30 to 10:30 p.m. You can grab a drink and test your knowledge on everything from pop culture to holiday classics.

Saturday

Story Time With Santa: Santa Claus is coming to the Triple-O Lodge. Story Time With Santa runs from 9:30 to 11 a.m. and costs $35. There will be a festive sing-along, donuts, cocoa, photos with Santa, picture coloring, and sugar cookie decoration. You can learn how to get tickets here. Figure Skating Demonstration: The Thomas Creek Figure Skating Club is holding a demonstration at the ice rink at MLK Park. Stakers will demonstrate their skills from noon to 12:30 p.m. Live Music: Jacob Merrill, a saxophonist from Ithaca and based in Rochester, is set to perform festive tunes at the Simcona Stage. It runs from 8 to 11 p.m.

The Big Give (Friday)

‘Tis the season of giving, and News10NBC welcomes you to give big during our first-ever Big Give event on Friday, Dec. 12. From 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., News10NBC crews will be out at Innovative Field collecting your food donations to benefit the House of Mercy.

The House of Mercy is looking for fresh food, non-perishables, or frozen food. You can bring it in plastic bag, cardboard box, or just hand it to a News10NBC staffer on site. You can learn how to take part and what to donate here.

Holiday Sip and Shop at the Memorial Art Gallery (Friday)

You can celebrate the season at MAG with half-price admission and a festive Holiday Sip & Shop Night on Friday, Dec. 12. It runs from 5 to 8 p.m.

Guests can enjoy live holiday jazz in the Vanden Brul Pavilion and shop in the MAG store, featuring art-inspired gifts, work by local artists, MAG merchandise, stocking stuffers, and more. Complimentary gift wrapping is available.

You can also sit down for dinner at Brown Hound Downtown or stop by the bar for a holiday cocktail and explore the galleries. There will be masterworks on view in Frontiers of Impressionism: Paintings from the Worcester Art Museum. More information can be found here.

Holidays at the Market (Sunday)

Holidays at the Market has kicked off, filling the Rochester Public Market with holiday gifts and activities. The third market takes place on Sunday, Dec. 14. Then, the series closes out on Thursday night, Dec. 18.

Shoppers can find fresh-cut Christmas trees, wreaths, handcrafted items, speciality foods and drinks, clothing, jewellery, and other items. There will also be visits with Santa in the market’s indoor “B” shed from 9 a.m. to noon on Sunday. Santa will also be there from 6 to 8 p.m. on the Thursday market. Guests can also enjoy carriage rides from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday and 6 to 9 p.m. on the Thursday market. 

The holiday cookie contest also returns this year. Amateur and professional bakers can enter their best baked goods for a chance to win Market Gift Tokens. Entries have closed for this year and winners will be announced on the Market’s website and social media. Local bakers and food critics will sample the community’s entries.
