BRIGHTON, N.Y. — The Brighton Central School District’s plan to install a new artificial turf field at Brighton High School has faced significant community pushback due to concerns about potentially harmful chemicals.
Community members expressed worries about PFAS, chemicals that may be found in artificial turf and could affect water runoff and student health.
Despite the public opposition, Superintendent Kevin McGowan said the plans are unlikely to change, as they have already been voted on.
“It would be easy to be disingenuous with you and say, ‘you know what, yeah. We should think about. Then we’ll go back and then we’ll let you know,'” McGowan said. “But I want to keep going back to the reality of how many people did vote to in favor of this, and that we don’t always in a democracy, if we don’t like it, later get to go back to it.”
Jim Howe, a voter, expressed disappointment with the project’s scale.
“Well, I voted for this because we definitely needed improvements in our fields,” Howe said. “I think what many of us have seen [is] that the scale of the change, including astroturf covering a lot of the grass fields that were there, is different than what we anticipated.”
Superintendent McGowan said changes to the plan could cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. However, some parents are exploring ways to revote on the topic.
Construction vehicles are already on site, and construction is expected to start soon.
