PHOENIX — While Arizona Diamondbacks executives made the trip out to Orlando for the winter meetings, nearly 500 kids from around the Valley descended on Chase Field on Monday.
Students from Title 1 schools received the opportunity to spend time with some D-backs players and hang out on the Chase Field outfield. They got to hit wiffle balls pitched by Baxter, run races, receive gifts, greet Santa and and meet an armadillo from the Phoenix Zoo.
“Just showing up here this morning and seeing their bright faces, they were just so excited. It’s always awesome to get out in the community,” pitcher Brandon Pfaadt told Arizona Sports.

Title 1 schools receive federal financial assistance to educate children from lower-income families.
Valencia Newcomer School teaches children new to the United States, including immigrants and refugees. The school assists their transition to a new country, and for many of these kids, the trip to Chase Field was filled with firsts.
“Most of our students, they’ve been in the country for less than a year. For most of them, this is their first big holiday winter activity,” teacher J.J. Montoya said.
“For many of them, it’s their first time seeing Santa Claus, it’s their first time receiving a Christmas gift. They learn from it, they’re learning social skills, they’re practicing their English. They’re saying ‘please’ and ‘thank you.’ And they’re so delighted to receive these gifts.”
