Despite some transparently motivated pushback on the third base rumors straight out of the Winter Meetings, the Chicago Cubs remain interested in free agent third baseman Alex Bregman, according to multiple sources.
That is not to say Jed Hoyer doesn’t truly believe in Matt Shaw (I’m sure he does; I do too). Or that the Cubs will end up with Alex Bregman when all is said and done. But any idea that they’re not involved in his market because of Shaw seems to be, at best, regular old free agent subterfuge. It also doesn’t hurt to show some love and support for a player who may very well be your third baseman in 2026 and beyond. No qualms with the message or the reporting. Just wanted to give you some context on how I received it.
So how likely are the Cubs to land Bregman this time around, anyway? Well, that might require one of four specific paths to unfold, all of which run directly through the Boston Red Sox and their many alternatives in both free agency and trade.
Alex Bregman and the Chicago Cubs
In a video hit with Foul Territory yesterday at the Winter Meetings, Sahadev Sharma doubled down on his reporting of the Cubs’ interest in Alex Bregman, outlining the path the market would need to take for the Cubs to end up with the third baseman:
“Yeah, I mean, they’re interested in Alex Bregman. Right now, what’s the market for Alex Bregman? It’s kinda the same as it was last year, at least the finalists of last year: Boston, Detroit, and the Cubs. Detroit is similar to the Cubs in the sense that they don’t seem to want to be super aggressive … I think what (the Cubs) are looking for here is for Boston to end up with another bat that’s not Alex Bregman. That happens, and suddenly the market collapses for Bregman, and you’re in a two-team race with Detroit. And I think I can see the Cubs ending up with Bregman.”
So what are the Red Sox non-Bregman options? There are many.

We’ve already discussed Boston’s interest in free agent shortstop/third baseman Bo Bichette (and how a potential Kyle Tucker deal with Toronto could kick-start that path). And we’ve generally theorized on the Red Sox’s interest in Pete Alonso, as well (he’s a first baseman, but it’s at least somewhat related to adding one big bat this winter). But the interest in trades for either Ketel Marte or Isaac Paredes is relatively new and notable.

“Paredes, who is under club control for two more seasons with a projected $9.3 million salary in 2026, is yet another hitter in whom the Red Sox have expressed interest, according to sources briefed on their discussions.” “The Boston Red Sox are among the teams interested in Marte, according to sources briefed on the discussions. Three unidentified clubs are also said to be in the mix.”Rosenthal clarifies that Bregman “still appears to be the Red Sox’s No. 1 target,” but there are multiple viable paths for the Red Sox to take that could leave Bregman to the Cubs, and that makes it all the more probable an outcome (especially, with multiple options in both free agency and trade).
So what’s the bottom line here? If you’re hoping for the Cubs to sign Alex Bregman this offseason, you’re really rooting for the Red Sox to sign one of Bichette/Alonso or trade for one of Marte/Paredes.
