For the past 12 to 13 days, high temperatures have remained consistently below normal, and you would have to look back to the days before Thanksgiving to find a single above-normal high. Early Monday morning brought another round of bitter cold. While these numbers are unofficial, Medina in Orleans County dropped to seven degrees below zero. Canandaigua and Rush reported lows of one degree above zero, and the Rochester Airport bottom out at just four degrees F.
Over the past 24 hours, conditions were nearly ideal for producing such frigid temperatures: clear skies, very dry air, light winds, and—most importantly for this time of year—a deep snowpack. A look through the record books shows that the coldest temperature ever observed on this date was 2 degrees F above zero, recorded in 1906. While this longstanding record is likely to hold, the fact that we are even approaching it speaks to the unusual severity of the current cold spell.
Even without setting a new record, it appears this will mark the coldest December temperatures in the region in years. If the month were to end today, the average temperature would be almost 12 degrees F below normal. Looking ahead, the forecast offers little relief. Over the next ten days, temperatures are expected to remain well below normal, keeping the early-season chill firmly in place.
