As there continue to be indicators that Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt will enter the transfer portal, Kenny Dillingham said players don’t deserve the blame for the “mess” of the transfer landscape.
Dillingham on Monday all but confirmed Leavitt’s departure and left it for the quarterbacks’ inner circle to make news of a transfer official.
“I’m very, very confident that we’re going to have a really, really good quarterback at Arizona State,” Dillingham said on a Zoom call after wishing Leavitt “nothing but the best” going forward.
Leavitt was reportedly the only captain not present at the team’s end-of-season banquet on Sunday, and Dillingham reiterated on Monday that no matter what happens, he will always have a “really, really good relationship” with the quarterback.
“I saw him grow from a dude who wasn’t playing at (Michigan State) to a guy who got to hold a championship (trophy) up and then be hyped for the Heisman, the guy who was hyped for a first-round pick,” Dillingham said. “I got to be a part of that growth process, and I’m just blessed.
“I’m always going to stay in contact … (we’re) going to have a lifelong relationship.”
ASU coach Kenny Dillingham left it to Sam Leavitt's team to put out news about the player's future after a report surfaced that the QB missed a team banquet.

The coach went on to say he’s always supportive of whatever players believe is the best decision for them. When that best decision entails transferring, players shouldn’t be blamed, the coach argued.
“At the end of the day, the adults were the people who started this mess and now people try to blame the kids. This isn’t a kids problem,” he said. “There’s not even a problem at all if you don’t care that people leave.
“This is an adults mess — not a kids mess — and people try to throw these kids into it. And I get it, they make a lot of money now, but put the blame on me. I gotta do more to continue that. … I have nothing but love for Sam. I want to see him succeed. I’ll help him in any way I can in whatever his next chapter of life is.”

Report: Sam Leavitt no-shows ASU team banquet, Dillingham wishes him well
His mindset was already shown at the end of last regular season, when he allowed players who were in the transfer portal to continue practicing with the team during the postseason. Players described the approach as a breath of fresh air.
Because Jeff Sims will be out of eligibility at the end of the season, redshirt freshmen Cam Dyer and Michael “Butter” Tollefson, plus four-star 2026 signee Jake Fette, would be left as the only quarterbacks on the roster should Leavitt depart. The team would likely seek experience in the portal, too.
Sims will start the Sun Bowl, Dillingham said Monday, but Dyer may get some packages.
