Shedeur Sanders is finally getting the keys to the castle in Cleveland.
It might be just for the final four games of the 2025 NFL season. But if Sanders is going to be the long-term answer for the Browns, it will be because of how his journey began down the stretch of his rookie season. Here is the announcement from Browns Head Coach Kevin Stefanski, who shares the news that Shedeur Sanders has been named Cleveland’s starting for the rest of the season:

Words from Browns Head Coach Kevin Stefanski:
“I think all along with our quarterbacks and our young players, you’re always making sure that you’re making the right decisions for our guys. And I think he has constantly, and consistently, gotten better in each one of these games and how he’s approached this game. He’s been working very hard, so I feel good about where his development is heading. He knows there are always going to be plays where he can be better, and those types of things, but he’s very intentional about getting better each and every game he’s out there.”

And just like that, what I predicted about Shedeur Sanders being the Cleveland Browns starting quarterback when they faced the Chicago Bears in December is coming true. It always made sense for Cleveland to slow-play the inevitable. And while I’m not sure Sanders will stick, he will get opportunities to make his case down the stretch.

Mandatory Credit: Stephen R. Sylvanie-Imagn ImagesShedeur Sanders is coming off a game in which he completed 23 of 42 passes for 364 yards and three touchdowns. He did throw an interception, took two sacks, and was hit 14 times by Tennessee Titans defenders in Week 14. And yet, Sanders finished with a 97.7 passer rating. On the year, the rookie who played collegiately at Colorado has an 80.9 passer rating, a 5-3 touchdown-to-interception ratio, a 52.4 percent completion rate, and 769 yards in his first four games as a pro. Next up for the fifth-round rookie is a date with a Chicago Bears team that is 9-4, but coming off a heart-wrenching loss to the Green Bay Packers.
For what it’s worth, I think Shedeur Sanders and the Browns present an intriguing test for the Bears. This should be a get-right game for Chicago’s football team. The Browns stink. They are 3-10, currently sitting in a position where they would pick fourth overall in the 2026 NFL Draft, and just took a home loss to a Tennesse Titans team that is 2-11 and vying for the No. 1 pick for the second straight season. There should be no excuses for the Bears this week. They should rough up Sanders early and often.

To be clear, this isn’t to say that the Bears should take this opponent lightly because that would be a recipe for disaster. But players like Shedeur Sanders are playing to put their name on the map. And what better way to do that than in a road game against a team making a playoff push in December? With that being said, I look forward to seeing what Bears Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen has dialed up this week. Whatever it is, I hope it results in a Bears win.
