In one of its most dominant wins of the season, Alabama women’s basketball took down the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks 75-38 at home on Sunday afternoon.
There was never a real moment of struggle for the Crimson Tide. The team never trailed, jumping out to an 8-0 lead in the first three minutes and keeping it at double-digits for the entirety of the last three quarters.
The score was 20-10 after an efficient first quarter for Alabama, which shot 4/10 from the 3-point line and 8/14 from the field overall compared to 0/2 and 5/9 splits from the Warhawks. Guard Jessica Timmons had 8 of those 20 points, going 2/2 from 3 and 3/3 from the field.
“I thought she showed a lot of poise and patience and let the game come to her,” head coach Kristy Curry said.
In the second quarter the offensive onslaught continued, but it was predicated less on lights-out shooting and more on crisp ball movement with minimal mistakes.
The Crimson Tide only committed two turnovers and went 11/18 from the field despite shooting 0/5 from range. Combined with forcing nine turnovers and holding ULM to 4/11 field goal shooting, Alabama’s second quarter effort pushed the lead to 43-19 going into the half.
Timmons praised her team’s ability to take care of the ball and its impact on results, saying, “If we capitalize off stuff like that, we’ll win games like this.”
Only once did the gap ever get closer than 24, and it was a 45-23 blip at the beginning of the third quarter. Otherwise, the game was never in question, and the Crimson Tide rode its consistent dominance to a 37-point victory.
Scoring was evenly distributed for Alabama, as the team got 17 points from Timmons and 11 each from guards Karly Weathers and Ta’Mia Scott and forward Naomi Jones, the last of whom started in the absence of forward Essence Cody.
“I’m really proud of Naomi. I see it every day in practice, so it’s not really a surprise,” Curry said. “She really stepped up and gave us a calmness and a poise.”
This was also a significant game for guard Waiata Jennings, who was playing only her third game of the season after coming back from injury. In the last two games she played a combined 10 minutes, but on Sunday alone she played 19 and put up 9 points on 4/7 shooting along with two assists.
It was an all-around satisfactory effort for the Crimson Tide, which moves to 10-0 and only has four games left before SEC play starts. In a time of the year when refining inconsistencies and preparing for conference play is vital, this win is a step forward.
“What we do this week will impact next week,” Curry said, looking ahead to an upcoming stretch of four games in eight days starting next week.”
Alabama will next play against Jackson State on Sunday inside Coleman Coliseum. The game will tip off at 3:00 p.m. and can be streamed on SEC Network.
