Instant Bears Player Grades: A Tale of Two Halves ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

A tale of two halves in Green Bay today for the Chicago Bears. If the second half Bears show up at kickoff in two weeks when these two teams meet at Soldier Field, I’ll feel real good about their chances of evening the season series.

Bears Instant Grades

Offense

QB Caleb Williams | C-

It’s almost like good pass pro helps … Caleb Williams:

1H: 6/14, 32 YDS, 0 TD, 50.3 RTG 2H: 13/21, 154 YDS, 2 TD, 1 INT, 96.1 RTG

That said, Williams’s bad decision was the backbreaker today. The interception in the end zone was a good look—the exact look they ran for the Kmet touchdown in Philly—but Williams would have been better off running for the first down there than throwing.

That play call was a backbreaker for Philly last week, and a backbreaker for the Bears this week—painful irony. Caleb made the wrong call today, but he rarely makes the wrong decision, so while it hurt his grade today, it’s not a long-term concern in any way.

RB Kyle Monangai & D’Andre Swift | B

These two continue to be excellent every week. But, as with Williams, the first-half versus second-half production clearly shows the importance of the offensive line. The Packers dominated the line of scrimmage in the first half, making Chicago’s offensive line look as vulnerable as they have all season. In the second half, when the line was better, so was the offense.

WR DJ Moore | F

Finishing with negative yardage is something.

WR Luther Burden III | A

Another really good day for the rookie.

TE Cole Kmet | B

A couple of timely catches for Kemt today.

TE Colston Loveland | B

A rough start for Loveland grew into a solid performance.

Offensive Line | C

A tale of two halves here. The first half was as bad as they’ve been all season. The second half was much better. It’ll be interesting to see the tape and see the how and why behind the flip, but first blush, it’s simply a big hat tip to Green Bay DC Jeff Hafley in the first half.

Defense

Defensive Line | C-

Jordan Love had way too much time to operate today. The rush has to be better against contenders.

Linebackers | D

Josh Jacobs did what he wanted, and Jayden Reed was in space way too often in front of the second level. I know there are some depth issues in this group right now, but this was an underwhelming performance.

Secondary | D

Green Bay’s receivers had far too much space to operate today, and it hurt. Multiple times, there were one-on-ones with multiple yards of separation where Love was able to float one away from the defender with relative ease. The coverage was lacking, and Green Bay gashed them too many times.

Special Teams

K Cairo Santos | A

Did everything he was asked to do.

P Tory Taylor | A+

A 52.0-yard average and a long of 63 is a good day at the office.

Bears Coaching

Ben Johnson | B

The first half was bad. Green Bay pulled all of the right levers on both sides of the ball. But regardless of the result, Ben Johnson made the adjustments he needed to in the locker room at the half to make this a ballgame that went down to the wire. No matter what, Ben Johnson always seems to have an answer, even against one of the best defenses in the NFL, and that’s promising.

Dennis Allen | C+

A very “meh” performance. Green Bay in Lambeau is no easy task. Chicago’s defense wasn’t awful. It wasn’t great either. But in the grand scheme of things, I don’t think Dennis Allen did anything “wrong” today. Just didn’t get enough right.
