Vanderbilt football, as expected, has been left out of the College Football Playoff despite finishing 10-2 on the season against an SEC schedule.
The official College Football Playoff bracket was revealed on Sunday, and despite the best efforts of Vanderbilt coach Clark Lea on Saturday night, the Commodores were a few spots away from earning a bid. While it’s unfortunate for the Commodores, it’s hard to have not seen this coming.
Vanderbilt being left out, though, has less to do with Vanderbilt and more to do with the number of teams with CFP-caliber resumes. Miami, Notre Dame, BYU, Alabama and Vanderbilt were all battling for 2 spots, and when you compare the resumes, the Commodores just never had a chance. Vanderbilt’s best win on the season was Tennessee, which is a worse top win than every other team listed.
While the Commodores do have “good” losses to Alabama and Texas, their overall body of work just was not enough. With all that said, some argue the Commodores have a better resume than Miami thanks to the Hurricanes’ 2 losses to unranked teams.
Obviously, some fans are not happy with this decision, with many questioning the format for the Playoff if a 10-2 SEC team is not going to play for a national title. Especially so with teams such as Tulane and James Madison getting that honor.
Here’s a look at some of the best reactions we found from Vanderbilt being left out of the Playoff:
I will die on the hill that Vanderbilt was robbed t.co/EVyfR4kQt0
— Drew (NTE) (@NotTheExpertYT) December 7, 2025It is ridiculous that JMU and Tulane are in the College Football Playoffs … and Notre Dame and Texas and Vanderbilt are not. This shouldn't be about "everybody gets a chance." This should be about THE BEST 12 TEAMS IN AMERICA. Come on.
— Skip Bayless (@RealSkipBayless) December 7, 2025I’m a Tennessee fan but Vanderbilt deserves to be in the playoffs.
— Chad (@cwells52) December 7, 2025The issue isn't Notre Dame not being in its Bama with 3 L's and getting dog walked in the SEC championship game not only getting in they finished 9th! Vanderbilt was 10-2 in the same conference.
— Cerrone Battle (@Cerrone_Battle) December 7, 2025College football playoff is a joke. Just go back to the BCS. Let’s keep it real Notre Dame and Vanderbilt would curb stomp JMU and Tulane. The fact they have to let these inferior schools in the field to make it seem like everyone has a fair chance is complete bs. t.co/SvzEdpvlQc

— Vandy Sixty Two (62) (@vandy_62) December 7, 2025Hard to make sense of these polls. BYU and Alabama get blown out in their conference title games and drop just one spot each — enough for Miami to jump two places during an off week, yet somehow not enough for Vanderbilt to move at all. The logic gets murkier every week. t.co/EOX0Tv9Nbq
— Dylan Tovitz (@dtovitz) December 7, 2025Good for the committee to leave out Notre Dame. Vanderbilt has a better resume than Miami and I don’t think it’s really close.
— Jared Stillman (@JaredStillman) December 7, 2025There is 100% a bias working against Vanderbilt that’s driven primarily by preconceived notions and preseason rankings (which should be outlawed). t.co/Xj8h3zVvSV
