SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Two local high school football teams are on the brink of making history as they compete for their first state titles at the JMA Wireless Dome in Syracuse this weekend.
Monroe and Brighton high schools are preparing for their respective state championship games. Monroe’s game is scheduled for Saturday at 3 p.m., while Brighton will kick off at 6 p.m. Friday. Both teams are seeking their first state titles, and it has been since 2018 that any Section V team has won a state championship in football.
Earlier Friday, both schools celebrated with parades for their teams. Brighton’s Bruins, who won their first-ever Section V title last year, left their school with an 11-2 record and a six-game winning streak. They face a tough opponent in Section One’s Rye, the Garnets, who are undefeated with a 13-0 record and won the 2023 Class B Championship.
Monroe will play against Section One’s Sleepy Hollow on Saturday. The Red Jackets boast an 11-0 record and have not been in a one-score game all season.
Securing a win would be historic for both schools, but reaching this point is already a huge victory for both schools.
Section Five is eager to bring home its first state championship since 2018.
