Chaos ensued outside the Barabati Stadium. With cricket fever back in Cuttack ahead of India vs South Africa’s 1st T20I in December, ticket demand has soared to an all-time high. Online ticket sales started earlier in the week and have already closed.
Chaos for IND vs SA 1st T20I tickets
Those who couldn’t get their hands on the online tickets flocked to the Barbati Stadium to buy offline tickets. As a result, a stampede-like situation was created. Dare I say, it gave horrors of the unfortunate Bengaluru tragedy earlier in the year, which left 11 dead and around 50 injured.

— Soumyajit Pattnaik (@soumyajit) December 5, 2025The sale of offline tickets commenced at 6 AM on Friday, December 5. However, people started gathering outside the Barabati Stadium since 11:30 PM on Thursday, December 4. Although police tried to manage the situation as best as possible, the visuals may make it seem like an accident waiting to happen.
Illegal sale begins
According to OdishaTV, due to the high demand, black marketing of tickets for the India vs South Africa 1st T20I has started. Tickets originally priced at INR 1,100 are being sold at nearly six times more at INR 6,000. While more prominent tickets, priced at INR 6,000, are going to nearly double at INR 11,000.
Should BCCI reconsider policy?
This begs the question: should the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) reconsider its ticketing policy? As of now, no cricket stadium has 100% sales of tickets online. This invariably creates a situation where fans arrive in huge numbers at the offline ticketing counters.
All of this could be eased if ticket sale becomes 100% online. Fans would be required to provide proof of purchase while entering the stadium. But, despite being the richest cricket board in the world, the BCCI hasn’t taken a step towards this as fans continue to suffer.
