CHURCHVILLE, N.Y. (WHEC) — The Churchville-Chili boy’s basketball team is aiming for more than just a Sectionals victory this season. The Saints are focused on changing the perception of their program and building a strong foundation for future generations.
“Of course we want to change the culture here and how people look at us. But yeah, there’s that certain pressure to set the future generations up,” junior Landon Healy said.
The Saints have not won a Sectionals game since 2022. The current senior class is determined to rebuild the program.
“We’ve been working hard. We’re trying to get back in the groove. We’ve had a rough past couple years, so we’re trying to change the perspective of that,” senior Joshua Minor said.
“They don’t think we’re very good, which is reasonable, because of our past seasons, but we’ve worked hard and this is what this season’s for. To prove people wrong,” junior Brayden Stedmen said.
The team is relying on a large group of returning players. Despite not having tall players, they plan to create chaos on the court.
“We’re not a very tall team, our tallest guy is maybe 6-5, but other than that there’s not much. I think the way we play as a team and energy, we run up and down up the floor,” senior Jason Small said.
“We bring in a lot of the same guys, but I think the culture’s different. We see last year as it could have been a lot better, we think. And that’s what this year’s for. I think we’re gonna be better this year, and it’s gonna be fun doing it,” Stedmen said.
The Saints are eager to gain postseason experience and change their track record. Their first game is scheduled for Friday against Pittsford Mendon.
