CHILI, N.Y. — People from different industries that affect the cost of living attended a roundtable discussion about affordability hosted by state senators.
The president of the Food Industry Alliance of New York State highlighted the impact of tariffs and global uncertainty on the supply chain. In New York, high business taxes and energy costs also contribute to the difficulty of lowering prices.
“They try to do that, but at the end of the day they have to remain viable as well,” Mike Durant said. “So they’re feeling pressure from the supply chain, you know, and their costs as a grocery store and any individual location are going up.”
Durant said the roundtable, hosted by state senators, was critical in helping lawmakers understand the impact of legislation.
“An individual piece of legislation that you may think is directly impacting, say, the insurance industry also is going to impact our farmers, our retail, food and other sectors,” he said.
A homebuilder in the Rochester area said several factors are driving up homebuilding costs, including regulatory issues, code changes, and material costs.
“Since Covid, our construction costs have gone up about 35 to 40%,” Jim Barbato said. “They’ve stopped going up with that rate of increase, but they’ve stayed up at that high level.”
Barbato said rising construction costs and a lack of housing in the area make it difficult to pass savings to buyers.
“We’re not trying to gouge the consumer,” Barbato said. “But on the other hand, the consumer is the one that ends up paying those higher construction costs.”
