Elementary and middle schools in a north suburb have been closed for days to due what the school is calling a “cyber security incident,” with before and after-school activities also canceled as officials worked to investigate.
The closures come after school was already closed last Wednesday, Thursday and Friday for the Thanksgiving holiday.
The incident, impacting Zion Elementary School District 6, began Nov. 30 according to a post on the district’s website, with officials saying electronic files and servers across the district “may have been compromised.”
“We are working diligently to determine the credibility and full extent of this potential breach,” the post went on to say.
At the time, the district announces all schools and activities and would be closed Dec. 1 as it conducted an investigation.
In an update Dec. 1, the district said district services remained suspended as officials worked with specialists “to evaluate the nature and scope of this incident.” NBC Chicago has reached out to the district for more information.
By Tuesday, the issue had not yet been resolved, with schools and activities still closed through Wednesday. They were expected to reopen to students and staff Thursday, a message posted Tuesday said.
“While our investigation into the recent cybersecurity incident is still ongoing, we are confident that our systems and campuses are safe and secure to welcome students back,” the message said.
According to the website, Zion Elementary School District 6 incudes seven schools, ranging from Pre-K to eight grade.
