Josh Brynes, the longtime Dodgers senior vice president of baseball operations, will be hired as the Rockies’ new general manager, a major league source confirmed Wednesday.

The Athletic first reported the news.

With the Rockies, Byrnes will work under Paul DePodesta, Colorado’s new president of baseball operations. This will be Byrnes’ second stint with the Rockies.

DePodesta and Byrnes have a long history together. They both graduated from Harvard University, and both began their baseball careers in Cleveland’s front office.

Byrnes, who is two years older than DePodesta, shared DePodesta’s interest in analytics early on.

Byrnes, 55, has an extensive and rich baseball background. He was previously the GM for both the Padres and Diamondbacks. Byrnes served as an assistant GM with the Rockies from 1999 through 2002. Byrnes also served as an assistant GM with the 2004 Red Sox during their curse-breaking World Series victory.
