London, Dec.3 (SANA) Amnesty International said Tuesday that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) committed war crimes during their raid on the Zamzam camp for displaced people on the outskirts of El Fasher in Darfur earlier this year.
In its report, the organization said RSF fighters attacked the camp between April 11 and 13, an area that hosted nearly one million people, and deliberately killed civilians and took others hostage. The assault also included the looting and destruction of mosques, schools, and medical clinics, according to testimonies from 29 witnesses, including survivors, relatives of victims, and journalists.
Amnesty reported that the RSF used explosives and opened fire indiscriminately in densely populated areas. Its findings, which align with UN reports, indicate that hundreds were killed and more than 400,000 civilians fled the camp.
Amnesty’s Secretary-General Agnes Callamard said: “The RSF’s horrific and deliberate attack on desperate and starving civilians in the Zamzam camp once again leaves no doubt about their contempt for the right to life.”
Satellite images taken on April 16 and analyzed by Amnesty International showed new craters in the area, indicating extensive use of explosive weapons.
Since El Fasher fell to RSF control last October, reports have continued to emerge of mass killings, ethnic violence, abductions, and sexual assaults. Human rights groups have also documented ethnically motivated killings in RSF-held areas.
Sudan’s crisis has continued to intensify amid fighting between the army and the RSF since April 2023, leaving tens of thousands dead and millions displaced, while the UN warns of an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe.
