Ope, Actually, Maybe Willson Contreras Hates St. Louis ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

Yesterday, we discussed a report that, despite the ongoing – and accelerating – rebuild in the St. Louis Cardinals organization, Willson Contreras was not inclined to waive his no-trade clause. I joked that he must really love St. Louis.

Now I get to joke that he actually hates St. Louis:

Willson Contreras is open to trade offers and has become more willing to waive his full NTC over the last few weeks. How does that fit into the #STLCards trade plans?Where things stand on Contreras, Arenado, Donovan, Nootbaar ahead of Winter Meetings: t.co/TG72zH22e5

Like I said yesterday, sometimes these situations can change quickly, especially when the rubber approaches the road and actual trade opportunities start to emerge. So, while it may have been true at some point recently that Contreras didn’t want to accept a trade, that could’ve changed rapidly.

As The Athletic reports, that is indeed something that has changed, with Contreras open to considering possible trades. I wonder to what extent the contrary reporting spurred the Cardinals to want to make sure possible suitors knew there was, in fact, a chance that Contreras would accept a trade. From the report:

“The Cardinals do not view trading Contreras as something they must do. They are not nearly as motivated to move him as they are Arenado. Trading Contreras would open up first base full-time for Alec Burleson and could alleviate some payroll concerns. If a suitable partner does not jump out, St. Louis could also hold onto Contreras to open the season and pursue moving him at the trade deadline.”

Now 33, the new first baseman has two guaranteed years left on his deal with the Cardinals, plus a club option in 2028. By and large, he’s done his job at the plate with the Cardinals (.261/.358/.459/129 wRC+), though he’s dealt with multiple injury issues, and no longer offers much defensive value (though he was perfectly playable at first base).

Still, he’s not too pricey ($18 million, $18.5 million, and then a $5 million buyout on a $17.5 million option), so it’s really the no-trade clause that would hold things up if the Cardinals were committed to dealing him.

As it was with Sonny Gray, I’m not rooting for a trade here. The Cardinals figure to be reasonably bad in 2026 regardless, so trading Willson Contreras is a good move for the organization (without any real benefit to other NL Central contenders). Thus, I don’t want them to be able to do it.
