Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ibrahim Olabi, said that Israeli provocations, such as what happened in the town of Beit Jinn (a town in the southwestern countryside of Damascus, near the occupied Syrian Golan Heights), are a reaction to the successes Syria has achieved recently, stressing that Israel is being pressured through political and legal means to isolate it.
“The restraint Syria has shown in response to Israel’s provocations is what led Security Council members to criticize Israel, and to a flow of investments into Syria, and it has also helped us build trust with the international community, especially since the Syrian government is a nascent government,” Olabi said in an interview with al-Jazeera Mubasher on Monday, 1 December.
“Israel wishes we would be dragged into these provocations to destroy our political and economic gains,” Olabi said, adding that “we will not respond to Israeli provocations, and we are keen on the safety of our people.”
He warned that responding to Israel’s provocations would drag Syria into an open war with it, “which would serve Israel’s interests, not those of the Syrians,” as he put it.
Olabi said that since the first day of liberation from Assad’s rule, the Syrian government has been working to rebuild Syria, “which is exactly what Israel does not want.”
He added that the visit of Syria’s transitional president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, to the United States, his attendance at UN General Assembly sessions, and the good relations Syria has built with the international community in a short period of time “are all things Israel does not want, because it does not want a strong Syria.”
Trump wants stability for Syria
“United States President Donald Trump wants Syria to succeed and be stable, and so do our regional and international allies, for several reasons, including controlling the flow of refugees and confronting the arms and proxies of Iran and Hezbollah, as Washington has allies on Syria’s borders who are affected by developments there, such as Turkey, a NATO member,” Olabi said.
He pointed out that “the personal relationship between Presidents al-Sharaa and Trump is strong, and Trump likes strong leaders.”
Responding to Israeli claims that Syria is harboring “terrorist” elements, Olabi stressed that such allegations are “baseless and contradictory.”
Syria’s transitional president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, held a meeting at the White House with US President Donald Trump to discuss the agreement with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), US sanctions on Syria, and the security agreement with Israel.
According to the Syrian Presidency, the talks between al-Sharaa and Trump on 10 November covered ways to strengthen bilateral relations and enhance cooperation in various fields, in addition to discussing several regional and international issues of mutual concern.
Syrian Foreign Minister Asad al-Shibani and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio attended the talks, along with several officials from both sides.
Latest Israeli operations
Thirteen civilians, including women and children, were killed and 24 others injured when the Israeli army shelled the town of Beit Jinn in the Damascus countryside on 28 November, while six Israeli soldiers were wounded in the clashes.
The shelling followed an incursion by the Israeli army into the town to arrest several young men, which led to clashes between residents and Israeli forces.
Israeli accounts differed over who was being targeted, as Israel initially said those targeted belonged to the Islamic Group, a Lebanese movement, then later accused Syrian intelligence of being behind the attacks.
A “full-fledged war crime.”
In a statement, the Syrian Foreign Ministry said Syria condemns “the criminal and flagrant assault” that led to direct clashes after residents of the town confronted the attacking patrol and forced it to withdraw from Syrian territory.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates affirmed that after the failure of the incursion, occupation forces targeted Beit Jinn with what it called “brutal and deliberate shelling that constitutes a full fledged war crime,” after Israeli forces “committed a horrific massacre” that claimed the lives of more than ten civilians, including women and children, and caused a large displacement movement as a result of continued “barbaric and deliberate” shelling of civilians’ homes, according to the statement.
Several states and organizations condemned the Israeli attacks on Beit Jinn in the Damascus countryside, including the United Kingdom, Turkey, Kuwait, the Arab League, the Gulf Cooperation Council, the United Nations, Qatar, Jordan, the Palestinian movements Hamas and Islamic Jihad, and the Muslim Brotherhood in Syria.
A wide-scale operation
Israel is seeking to change its tactics in Syria from ground arrests to aerial assassinations, according to Israel’s Channel 13.
The channel reported on 28 November, citing sources, that the Israeli army is studying the option of carrying out a wide-scale operation against President Ahmed al-Sharaa’s government if it is found that any of his men were involved in the clashes.
The Beit Jinn incident could push the Israeli army to change its approach on the Syrian border to protect its soldiers by reducing ground arrest operations and intensifying aerial assassinations.
