For the first time in tournament history, a Rochester City school is heading to the state championship, as Monroe bounces Owego, 48-7, in the West Semifinal.
“It means everything. It means that we’ve almost accomplished our goal we set out many years ago,” said head coach Terrell Cunningham. “Our goal was to be a championship caliber team and to bring the first state championship to the city of Rochester, RCSD. And, we have an opportunity to do that next week, we’re looking forward to it.”
“It truly means the world because it’s bigger than us, man. This is for generations, for the past, for the future generations to come,” said senior and Oregon commit Messiah Hampton. “This is not just for Monroe, but for the whole city of Rochester. The whole 585…The biggest thing is that we realize it’s deeper than us, it’s bigger than us. So that means the world.”
The 11-0 Red Jackets will play Sleepy Hollow on Saturday at the JMA Wireless Dome. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 pm. Monroe is also the first Section V team since 2019 to advance to the State Championship. The last team to win a state title from Section V was Aquinas in 2018.
Brighton plays in the Class A semifinal on Sunday, Nov. 30, against Union-Endicott.
