TAC Titans Big Southern Classic

Finola Whelehan and Nikki Nixon set two nation-leading times apiece for their age group this season at the TAC Titans Big Southern Classic in Cary earlier this November. The TAC Titans swimmers were the standout performers in a field that was brimming with fast swimmers and times.
Whelehan produced the fastest times in the girls’ 13-14 age group this season in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly. She set a North Carolina LSC Record in the 200 freestyle, winning in a time of 1:45.87, a personal best of nearly nine seconds and the 7th fastest swim by a 13-14-year-old girl in history. Her 2nd nation-leading time came in the 100 fly, where she clocked 54.15, shaving almost three seconds from her lifetime best.
Nixon swept the girls’ 15 & over butterfly events, and registered the fastest time set by a 15-16-year-old girl in the nation this season in both events. She stopped the clock in 53.31 in the 100 fly, and won the 200 with a time of 1:55.82. She is now the 16th fastest 100 butterflier of all time in her age group, and the 24th fastest 15-16-year-old girl in the 200 fly in history.
Those were the only event wins of the meet for Nixon, but the same cannot be said for Whelehan, who won an impressive eight events in total. In addition to the 200 free and 100 fly, she won the girls’ 13-14 100 free (50.26), 100 back (53.19), 200 back (1:57.62), 200 fly (2:01.12), 200 IM (2:02.14), and 400 IM (4:15.70). Each of those swims was a personal best that secured Whelehan a spot in the top-five times in the event in her age group this year.
Whelehan’s older sister, Sloane Whelehan, also had a strong meet. The 16-year-old placed 2nd in the girls’ 15 & over 100 and 200 freestyle, clocking 49.42 and 1:46.17, respectively. She is now the 6th fastest 15-16-year-old girl in the nation this season in the 100 free, and the 5th fastest in the 200.
TAC Titans’ Reina Liu was the second-most dominant swimmer of the meet. The 15-year-old took victory in the girls’ 15 & over 200 free (1:45.66), 100 back (53.12), 200 back (1:54.48), 200 IM (1:56.27), and 400 IM (4:13.30). Her times in the 200 free, 100 back, and 200 IM were the 2nd fastest swims in the country in those events by a 15-16-year-old girl this season.
TAC Titans’ Davis Jackson had a strong meet, taking home four wins and cracking the top-10 times in the 17-18 age group this season in the 200 back. Jackson took 1st in the 50 back (22.09), 200 back (1:42.69), 100 fly (47.62), and 200 IM (1:46.30). The 17-year-old Cal commit is now the 9th fastest 17-18-year-old boy in the nation this year in the 200 back, and the 11th fastest in the 200 IM.
New Wave Swim Team’s Parker Van Olst won two events and registered two top-ten times this season in the boys’ 15-16 age group. The 15-year-old clocked 3:54.17 to win the boys’ 15 & over 400 IM, becoming the 7th fastest swimmer in that age group this season. His other top-10 time came in the 200 breast. His prelims time of 2:01.49 made him the 8th fastest swimmer in his age group this year, and his finals time of 2:01.63 earned him 1st place in the event.
TAC Titans’ Steven Zhou had a strong meet, clocking personal bests in every swim of his meet and winning three events. The 14-year-old placed 1st in the 500 free (4:44.09) and 200 fly (1:52.74). His time in the 200 fly makes him the 5th fastest swimmer in his age group this season in the event. Zhou also produced a strong 200 IM, taking 2nd with a time of 1:54.70 that makes him the 14th fastest 13-14-year-old boy in the nation this year.
TAC Titans’ Carolin He swept the girls’ 15 & over breast events. She stopped the clock in 1:02.21 in the 100, the 7th fastest time in the country this year in her age group, and registered 2:14.71 in the 200, the 8th fastest time swum by a 15-16-year-old girl in the nation this year.
Other Notable Performances
Arlington Aquatics Club’s Connor Minear took 1st in the boys’ 15 & over 1000 free. The 15-year-old stopped the clock in 9:22.14 and earned himself a Winter Junior Championships cut. Former U.S. Olympian Ashley Twichell participated in the meet. She took 2nd in the girls’ 15 & over 500 and 1000 free, where she registered 4:47.24 and 9:45.53, respectively. New Wave Swim Team’s Mattaus Rammel swam the 93rd-fastest 100 free in the nation in the 17-18 boys’ age group this season.
