A 21-year-old suburban man was arrested and charged with setting his house on fire following a family argument on Thanksgiving, the Lake County Sheriff’s Office said, with the family seeing the home “filling with smoke” and the house sustaining major damage.
About 7:30 p.m. Thursday, deputies with the Lake County Sheriff’s Department responded to a verbal domestic dispute in the 40100 block of North Lone Oak Road in Beach Park. According to officials, family members said they were upset with relative Erik J. Crump, 21, who they say was “antagonizing and arguing” with others in the home.
Deputies were able to deescalate the situation, officials said, and Crump, who lived at the home, agreed to keep to himself for the remainder of the evening.
About an hour later, deputies responded to the same address for reports that the home was on fire.
As firefighters arrived, they reported seeing a man, armed with a knife, standing on the side of the road about a block away from the home.
The man, who matched Crump’s description, then fled the scene on foot, authorities said.
Deputies established a perimeter and were able to track Crump’s location to a storage facility in Beach Park in the 39400 block of North Lewis Ave. Crump was then taken into custody without incident, officials said.
An investigation determined that prior to the argument, Crump was told by his family that he was going to be kicked out of his home. Crump then left the residence but returned a short time later, heading to his bedroom near the garage before leaving again.
Moments later, the family saw smoke filling their home and evacuated.
According to deputies, Crump used an accelerant to set his room on fire, with the house sustaining “major damage.”
“It’s nothing short of a blessing that nobody was injured or killed in this senseless act,” Sheriff John D. Idleburg said in a release. “While families across Lake County were sitting down for Thanksgiving, our dispatchers were answering the call, and our deputies were out responding to them.”
Crump was charged with aggravated arson and residential arson, the sheriff’s office said. Crump was set to appear in court Friday morning.
