In the team’s second game of the Baha Mar Pink Flamingo Championship, Alabama women’s basketball took a 63-58 victory over Minnesota. Guard Jessica Timmons and forward Essence Cody scored 18 points each to lead the way for the Crimson Tide, which with this game won the Junkanoo Division of the tournament.

“Minnesota is a very good team and so well-coached. Dawn [Plitzuweit] does an amazing job, and that is a tournament team we just beat,” head coach Kristy Curry said.

Alabama flipped the script from its past couple of games and jumped out to an early 16-18 lead at the end of the first quarter and 27-17 going into halftime.

The early success was bolstered by winning a few key statistical categories, such as efficiency (37% field goal shooting to 21%), 3-point shooting (five to three), and combined blocks and steals (6-1). The defense created chaos and disruption for the Golden Gophers early on instead of needing a full half before ramping up the intensity.

“Just proud of our grit,” Curry said, lauding the team’s “toughness plays” that overall contributed to the victory.

After a mostly one-sided start, the game turned into a battle coming out of the break. Minnesota fought back from down and took the lead on multiple occasions, hitting a layup late in the third quarter to make it 43-42 and a 3 midway through the fourth to make it 53-52. Both baskets came from junior guard Grace Grocholski, who led the Golden Gophers in scoring with 18 points.

The home stretch of the fourth quarter was a testament to Alabama’s composure. After falling behind, Timmons hit a shot from deep to take a lead that the team would never relinquish. Over the final 4:30, the Crimson Tide went 4/4 from the free throw line and only allowed a layup and a free throw, getting key defensive stops that helped the team hold on to its narrow lead.

Outside of Cody and Timmons, Alabama was led by an 11-point and seven-rebound outing from senior guard Karly Weathers, who also hit three 3s. Freshman guard Ace Austin, who has put up solid shooting numbers all season and was named SEC Freshman of the Week last week, scored no points on 0/5 shooting.

The Crimson Tide will return to Coleman Coliseum on Monday against Kennesaw State. The matchup will be the team’s annual Fifth Grade Fast Break game and will tip off at 11:00 a.m. CT on SEC Network+.
