On Thanksgiving Day in Greeley, there are gobbler trekkers and there are turkey trotters.

They all came out Thursday for the 28th annual Greeley Turkey Trot, a community-based collaboration to benefit cardiac and pulmonary patients at the CardioVascular Institute of North Colorado at North Colorado Medical Center.

Slightly more than 3,000 signed up for the 2-kilometer walk, officially known as the gobbler trek, and the 5K run, known as the turkey trot. The event is a partnership between the Weld Legacy Foundation and the CardioVascular Institute at NCMC with support from multiple sponsors.

Weld Legacy development program director Allison Miller said 3,007 registered this year, an all-time high total she attributed to, in part, “our amazing community.”

Miller, who has been involved with the race for 25 years, said weather often dictates participation. Miller also said the cause also resonates with runners and walkers.

Proceeds from the race benefit cardiac and pulmonary patients in a rehabilitation program. The funds serve as “patient scholarships,” Miller said, allowing them assistance as they continue recovery following a cardiac event.

“It’s just the community coming together,” Miller said. “Almost everyone knows someone who’s had a cardiac event. It’s a necessary part of the healing process. It’s just a great thing. It wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without the turkey trot.”

According to online race results, 2,205 runners finished the 5K and 370 completed the 2K walk.

Race director Heather Schminke, who works for the CardioVascular Institute of North Colorado, said overall race organizers are seeing high numbers in their events. Schminke, who's worked on the race for 23 years, said they try to keep registration reasonably priced.

"We'e glad we benefitted (from more participants) and this continues to be a family event," Schminke added.

Greeley resident Matthew Hayden, a 17-year-old high school runner, finished fifth overall. He was among the multiple high-level and competitive runners in the race.

There were countless casual runners out for some exercise or to be with family as part of their holiday. Many of the runners and walkers wore turkey hats or costumes.

Hayden said he went into the race aiming for a personal record and he achieved the goal, finishing in 15-minutes, 40 seconds. He said he had about 20 friends and teammates at the race. Hayden is a homeschooled student, and he competes for Frontier Academy. Hayden was second in a state high school cross country championship race last year and he finished fourth this fall.

“Dude, it was awesome,” Hayden said of the run. “I felt great and I got out front and had fun.”

Grover resident Deb Duggan and her family have participated in the turkey trot since 2012. This year, Duggan and her husband, their three children and two grandchildren ran. Duggan said they started in 5K races when the children were running as middle school students and preparing to go to high school.

Duggan said she’d be happy if she finished in under 40 minutes. She ended running in 41:08 by the chip time and 41:43 on her gun time, according to the race results.

“We look forward to it every year,” Duggan said. “It’s becoming a family tradition. We love the cause. It’s a good cause. I told my husband if I can’t finish, I paid the fee. I made it.”
