IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. — The night before Thanksgiving is known as one of the most dangerous nights for drunk driving, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. News10NBC’s Declan Stablow spoke with the family of a young man killed by an impaired driver to discuss the importance of staying safe during the holidays.
Henry Rivera Jr., a senior at East Ridge High School in Irondequoit, was just 18 when an impaired driver going the wrong way on Route 590 hit and killed him. His parents urged those drinking to avoid driving.
“Please get a partner as your sober driver,” Rivera’s parents said. “There’s so much help out there these days as well. You know there’s Ubers, you can call so many agencies just to get a lift.”
Rivera died in May 2007. He had dreams of going to college and working in law enforcement. His parents said the holidays are especially difficult. “
You don’t think this is ever going to happen to you, but when it does it’s like… wow,” Rivera’s parents said. “When it happened to us I constantly stood by the kitchen window the first six, eight months. I was thinking man, my son’s car is going to come down the driveway.”
Nicholas Pryor, manager of Marshall Street Bar and Grill in Rochester, said the night before Thanksgiving is one of the busiest nights of the year for bars.
“It’s also a powder keg style scenario where, like I said, you’ve got people who are tired of their family already,” Pryor said. “They need to get away. They come out, they have a drink. You have people who no longer have family. They’re sad. They come in, they have a drink.”
Pryor emphasized that there is never an excuse to drive drunk.
“Yeah, just don’t drive. Really don’t drive,” Pryor said. “And honestly, not for nothing. Stay off of the, the Veos. Those things are freakishly dangerous. They’re even more dangerous if you stop and think about how many people are potentially going to be on the road when they shouldn’t be.”
A statewide “STOP DWI” campaign is underway to ensure people drive sober. It runs through Sunday.
