A passport is still a valid alternative—but it’s also easy to forget, and many travelers prefer not to carry such an important document for fear of losing it or having it stolen.
And with nearly 20 million travelers expected to fly this Thanksgiving alone, forgetting one of these documents could make an already hectic travel week even more stressful.

Apple’s New Digital ID Feature—And How It Works
The ability to store state IDs and driver’s licenses in Apple Wallet began rolling out in 2022, but the passport-based Digital ID option launched on November 12, 2025.
Digital ID allows users to create a secure, encrypted digital identity in Apple Wallet using information from their U.S. passport.It will initially be accepted in beta at TSA checkpoints at more than 250 U.S. airports.It's intended for identity verification at domestic airport security, not for international travel.Digital ID does not replace a physical passport and cannot be used for border crossings.
“With the launch of Digital ID, we’re excited to expand the ways users can store and present their identity—all with the security and privacy built into iPhone and Apple Watch,” said Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet. “Digital IDs bring this secure and convenient option to even more users across the country.”

How to Use Apple’s New Digital ID Feature Safely
Even with more than 250 participating TSA checkpoints, coverage isn’t universal. Both TSA and Apple recommend bringing a physical REAL ID or passport whenever you fly.

Older devices cannot store or present Digital ID.
4. Your phone can be lost or stolen.
While Find My may help recover it, it’s not guaranteed. If your phone goes missing on your trip, returning home without a physical ID could be problematic.
6. Privacy concerns remain.
Digital ID information is encrypted and stored locally on the device—not in the cloud. Still, privacy-conscious travelers may prefer not to upload sensitive documents, especially while the program is in beta testing.
