Either way, since I’d prefer the Cardinals were unable to effectively execute their preferred course of action, I am not happy about this trade. I liked the idea of them being stuck with every player they’d otherwise wanted to trade.
That said, since it was not a lock that the Cardinals were going to be able to trade Gray at all, at least this is an assist to the market for starting pitchers. In other words, if Gray had stayed in St. Louis and the Red Sox bought elsewhere, that tier of the market would’ve been a little tighter. In other words, a VERY SLIGHT assist to the Cubs.
