Boy, 14, shot and killed during ‘teen takeover' in the Loop remembered ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

Family, friends and classmates on Monday held a vigil for a 14-year-old boy who was shot and killed during a “teen takeover” in the Loop hours after the city’s Christmas tree lighting.

According to police, at approximately 10:40 p.m. on Friday, officers responded to a call of a person shot and found two people who had been struck by gunfire. The teen, who was later identified as Armani Floyd, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Three days following the shooting, his classmates gathered to honor a life cut far too short.

“The night before the lights I told him… be safe,” said Nyah Deberry, Armani’s girlfriend. “Stay with the people you’re with… you have a bright future.”

Armani was shot multiple times when gunfire erupted during the “teen takeover” hours after the city’s official Christmas tree lighting at Millennium Park.

On Monday night, candles surrounded the same basketball court he once lit up.

Floyd played with Project Swish—a program aimed at steering kids away from violence.

His death followed a chaotic night downtown; nine others were shot as the holiday season began. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson added 700 extra officers in addition to the officers who regularly patrol the area, but it still wasn’t enough.

In the wake of the shooting, Ald. Brian Hopkins, writing in a newsletter, reiterated calls to establish “a place-and-time dependent” curfew. Chicago currently has a 10 p.m. curfew in place for minors.

“We can invest in our young people… while also protecting neighborhoods from riots…” he said. “Curfews may have protected the victims by preventing them from being on the street at all.”

Both downtown shootings happened before 10 p.m., which is the curfew time Hopkins is pushing for.

While friends reflected, his mentor looked back at a promising life lost.

Armani was part of the Street Outreach Program at the Gary Comer Youth Center.

“Engage with your kids… keep them in a space of protection,” said Monyeka Lewis, the center’s community safety manager. “He just wanted to have fun and this turned into a tragic situation.”

Cook County Crime Stoppers is offering a $10,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest.
