The German Swimming Federation (DSV) has announced a roster of 18 men and 13 women for the 2025 European Short Course Championships. This is a significant increase from the much smaller roster of just eight that they sent to this meet in 2023.

The team will include a number of stars, including 2025 World Champions Lukas Maertens and Anna Elendt.

Maertens won gold at both the 2024 Olympics and 2025 World Long Course Championships in the 400 free. In between those swims, in April of this year, he broke the historic World Record set by his countryman Paul Biedermann. 2025 will be his European SC Championships debut.

Elendt, meanwhile, is the defending World Champion in the 100 breaststroke in long course. She last competed in Euro Short Course in 2019, when she was just 18 years old; in the period since, she has been competing at the University of Texas, which often has competitions in a similar time period.

Other stars on the team include Florian Wellbrock, who won four open water gold medals at the World Championships this summer. Also Angelina Koehler, the defending champion in the 200 fly who won six event titles at the German Short Course Championships earlier this month.

Olympic medalists Isabel Gose, a distance swimmer, and Oliver Klemet are also among a total of 18 athletes from the German squad at the World Aquatics Championships who will be in attendance.

“We are competing at the European Short Course Championships with an exciting mix of talent and experience. We are very pleased that many young athletes have earned their place on the national team with strong performances. In Lublin, we want to build on the strong results we have shown recently,” said Christian Hansmann , DSV Board Member for Performance Sport.

The smaller German team won three medals at the 2023 edition of the meet: gold from Koehler in the 200 fly, a silver and national record from her in the 100 fly, and a silver from Ole Braunschweig (who also returns this year) in the men’s 50 backstroke.

Germany has recently landed among the middle of the medals table at this meet. They have won exactly one gold at each of the last three editions, though in 2019 that included eight silver and bronze medals. That comes in contrast to the early years of the meet, when Germany led the medals table in 13 of the first 15 editions and 17 of the first 21. They last topped the medals table by gold-silver-bronze count the last time the meet was in Poland in 2011.

The 2025 European Short Course Swimming Championships are scheduled for December 2-7 in Lublin, Poland.
