I’m a soldier in Ukraine – Trump’s deal is an insult to everyone killed by Russia ...Middle East

News by : (inews) -

Soldiers and volunteers in Ukraine say Donald Trump’s “vile” deal to end the war is a “humiliation” that would betray the memories of those killed by Russia.

Western and Ukrainian troops who have served on the frontline told The i Paper they would rather carry on fighting than agree to the US-backed proposals.

The US-backed 28-point plan parrots key Russian demands and would force Ukraine to cede territory it currently controls, slash the size of its military to 600,000 and renounce ambitions to join Nato.

Russian special envoy Kirill Dmitriev spent three days with Trump envoy Steve Witkoff in Miami thrashing out the plan according to reports, raising fears the deal has been set up to suit the Kremlin.

Ania Tatou, 34, who was born in Poland before being raised in Antwerp, Belgium, has spent a year in the military, the last three months in an artillery unit in Ukraine’s 37th Marine Brigade.

Born without a right leg, she competed in Belgian 100-metre running championships and was a swimming champion at the age of 16.

But after moving to Ukraine, where her grandfather is from, she now serves in a logistics role supplying troops near the frontline who she says think Trump’s deal is “terrible”.

She told The i Paper: “It’s a big humiliation, for the people who died and the people still fighting.

“Because we cannot forget about the people still prisoners in Russia, the people dying.

“I think we will still continue to fight.”

She believes there would be “revolutions” in Ukraine if the terms of the US deal were accepted by Volodymyr Zelensky’s government, with people “very angry” about corruption allegations levelled at senior officials.

One Ukrainian soldier who has fought in the army’s special forces, said Trump’s plan was a “disgrace” and “complete capitulation”.

The soldier, 29, who goes by the callsign Enterprise and is serving in the Donbas, branded the proposals “vile, base, and corrupt” and said the deal hatched by Witkoff and Dmitriev “evoked anger and disgust”.

“The pressure is unilateral, only on Ukraine; there’s no pressure on Russia at all. Russia only benefits,” he said.

“This is pure nonsense, a devaluation of the heroism of the Ukrainian soldier and the Ukrainian people.

“Trump is now saving Russia and Putin’s army from military defeat, saving Russia from internal collapse, saving the Russian economy, and blackmailing Ukraine.”

Ceding the Donbas and its cities Donetsk and Luhansk to Russia, as outlined it the UK-backed deal, would mean surrendering land Moscow’s troops could not capture in the next three to five years, he believes.

“This would simply mean handing over the most fortified region, with all its fortifications and defensive structures, to Russia without a fight -essentially, handing over Ukraine’s main stronghold without a fight,” he said

“No one in the military supports this plan, because we all have to ask ourselves: why did so many soldiers die on our side? Just to give up the rest of the region without a fight?”

US volunteer Nick Suntken, 37, fought in Ukraine for two months, surviving waves of drone attacks and infantry assault in trenches.

He now works as a humanitarian volunteer evacuating civilians from fronlines in areas like the Donbas.

As a US Marine, he served in Irag and Afghanistan and says soldiers in Ukraine would rather fight on than accept a deal which is tantamount to “surrender”.

“Trump putting forward the idea of Ukraine surrendering the Donbas and not actually getting anything in return just shows that he’s operating as a Russian agent,” Sunkten, who is from the Ozark Mountains region of Arkansas, said.

Handing Russia the remaining regions of Donbas still controlled by Ukraine would only embolden Putin to rebuild their army and launch another invasion.
