ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A community cleanup event in Rochester brought volunteers to Culver Road and Monroe Avenue on Friday morning.

The volunteers gathered to pick up trash as part of an event organized by the nonprofit Walking for Rochester.

The event aims to eliminate litter in the Flower City, which is part of the nonprofit’s mission. Organizers said the number of volunteers doubles every year.

“It makes me feel very hopeful because I know that the goal of making Rochester, NY litter free is a daunting one. But by inspiring…and that’s what’s really exciting,” said Matt Apple, co-founder and CEO of Walking for Rochester.

Volunteers collected about 100 pounds of litter Friday. This year to date, the nonprofit has picked up over 5,000 pounds of litter, and has had over 800 volunteers help cleanup the Rochester area.

Walking for Rochester’s next community cleanup event is set for Tuesday, Nov. 25 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the corner of South and Averill Avenue in the city’s South Wedge.

Community cleanups are usually just one hour and open to everyone. Supplies are provided by the nonprofit. They usually run events from April – September, but occasionally host events in the fall and winter.
