The Brazilian Confederation of Aquatic Sports (CBDA) has announced the return of the Brazilian Open Championships to culminate the country’s 2025 swimming calendar.
The LCM competition, which will take place from December 2-6, comes back after a discontinuation since 2017. The international swimming community may best know the meet for Cesar Cielo’s historic 50 freestyle world record. Days before the FINA supersuit ban went into place in 2009, Cielo put up the 20.91 mark at this meet. To this day, that time has not been eclipsed.
To encourage its athletes to habitually swim fast in prelims, the CBDA will put the esteemed Julio de Lamare and Daltely Guimarães trophies up for grabs based on morning performances. These trophies are awarded to the top junior and senior club team, respectively. They have been awarded annually, but they were not tied to the revived Open meet until this year.
Rio de Janeiro-based CR Flamengo, meet hosts, will defend its Julio de Lamare junior trophy. The Paulista Corinthians club, meanwhile, will try to repeat its senior Daltely Guimarães award.
To earn points toward the awards, swimmers will be scored among Junior 1, Junior 2, and Senior divisions based on prelims results. The overall top ten swimmers from the morning will move on to the final to compete for medals.
At the time of publication, there is no list of athletes set to participate in the meet. Brazil’s top performers from this year, Gui Caribe and Stephanie Balduccini, are both training in the U.S. with NCAA teams, so we will see if they make the trip home. SwimSwam will be on the lookout for domestic mid-distance veterans Guilherme Costa and Maria Fernanda, as well as five-time 2025 Junior Pan American Games medalist Stephan Steverink.
The revived meet will coincide with other elite championship meets across the globe, including the Short Course European Championships and the U.S. Open.
