A Big Bullpen Move, a Bad Bullpen Trade, Non-Tenders, and Other Cubs Bullets ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

The combined impact of the back injury and a persistent sickness I just can’t kick have really been a drag the last month. I need to get over both humps to feel normal again, but it’s like I’ll make progress on one, but the other gets worse. Next week, maybe …

If you missed it, the Cubs have reportedly agreed to a deal with reliever Phil Maton (Michael with the scoop!), and Will Sammon says it’s a two-year deal with a club option for a third year. More coming on Maton, the first (of many needed) addition to the bullpen this offseason. We don’t yet have the dollar figures on the deal, but, historically, guys who have a long track record of being a steady reliever, who then tweak something(s) and blow up, tend to be paid really well in that first run through free agency after the performance spike. Also historically, the Cubs don’t go after those types, especially on a multi-year deal. They let other teams pay, and they try to find the guy they can help break out. So either or both of a couple things are true in this case: (1) the Cubs really, really, specifically like Phil Maton; and/or (2) the Cubs have made a philosophical change about how much payroll to commit to the bullpen. Speaking of the bullpen, yesterday’s Eli Morgan non-tender closes the chapter on what turned into one of the worst trades of the Jed Hoyer Era. That isn’t to say it was a disaster of a trade – the Cubs didn’t really miss Morgan this past season, and Alfonsin Rosario is still a good developmental leap away from being a big league regular – but that doesn’t mean we can’t evaluate the deal on its face. The Cubs acquired a reliever who was coming off an injury-impacted year, who had succeeded in a non-traditional way, and he stunk in a very brief time for the Cubs before dealing with injuries for most of the year. That’s what the Cubs got for a top-15 prospect in their system. Bad, bad use of that prospect capital. Interesting that, a year after the Morgan trade was the Cubs’ first bullpen move of the offseason, the Maton signing is the first bullpen move of this offseason. Very different ways to bring in an arm, and I suppose there is risk of failure on each (maybe you lose a valuable prospect for nothing, or maybe you commit multiple years and budget space to a guy who fails). I wouldn’t wholly rule out the Cubs making another Morgan-type-trade this offseason, though. Oh, and for the record: the Cubs and Morgan could still get back together on some kind of deal (it’ll just have more of a reclamation feel). But the trade for Morgan is concluded as of the moment of the non-tender, since a lot of what you were trading for is the team control. And the Cubs just relinquished it. Adolis Garcia may have been the biggest name non-tendered yesterday, though his dramatic performance decline the last two years made the non-tender not much of a surprise. Garcia, 33 next season, will find a deal out there, but I don’t know that he’ll be guaranteed a starter gig – he’s hit just .225/.278/.397/89 wRC+ over the last two seasons, worth a total 0.6 WAR. Maybe a rebuilding club takes a shot. He was a star in 2023.

Adolis García followed up his huge 2023 postseason with a monster first month of 2024 (.932 OPS, 8 HR in 29 games)but since then, his ranks among 119 qualified hitters:.218 BA (118th).270 OBP (119th).377 SLG (106th)81 wRC+ (118th)-0.3 fWAR (119th)so yeah t.co/2B0s0NZxgw

— Céspedes Family BBQ (@CespedesBBQ) November 21, 2025 A whole bunch of old friends were non-tendered yesterday: Mark Leiter Jr., Scott Effross, Michael Arias, Christopher Morel, Mike Tauchman, and Alexander Canario. Not tough to imagine a reunion with one of the relievers on a minor league deal. Well this is fun:
