Trump’s row with Marjorie Taylor Green reveals the cracks in the Maga church ...Middle East

News by : (inews) -

Republican congresswoman and MAGA icon Marjorie Taylor Greene has announced she will resign from her seat, days after Donald Trump called her a “traitor”.

Greene, 51, said that her final day in congress will be 5 January, ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

The decision comes after months of escalating tension between Greene and Trump, who were once firm allies.

MTG, as she is referred to by her supporters, had become increasingly critical of the Trump after he refused to release all files held by the justice department related to the convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein. Seemingly bowing to pressure, Trump signed a bill for the files to be released.

In response, Trump has described Greene as a “ranting lunatic” and said he would support a primary challenge against her.

He added: “All I see ‘Wacky ’Marjorie do is COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN!”

In a video released on X announcing her resignation, Greene said: “Standing up for American women who were raped at 14 years old, trafficked and used by rich, powerful men, should not result in me being called a traitor and threatened by the President of the United States, whom I fought for”.

She added: “I have too much self-respect and dignity, love my family way too much, and do not want my sweet district to have to endure a hurtful and hateful primary against me by the president we all fought for, only to fight and win my election while Republicans will likely lose the midterms.”

Greene, who grew up just outside of Atlanta, Georgia, has shot to notoriety for her confrontational spats with journalists and far-right views.

She had also fallen victim to a host of conspiracy theories, and faced widespread criticism for drawing parallels between Covid-19 masks and vaccinations and the persecution of Jews under the Nazi regime.

Greene has also posted on social media questioning the 9/11 attacks and alleged that school mass shootings had been staged. She later said she regretted earlier comments but did not apologise.

She was thrown off two committees in 2021 as a result.

When asked about her views by New Agents presenter, Emily Maitlis, she told her to “f*** off”, and has also refused to answer other questions by other British journalists.

Formerly a staunch proponent of Trump, whom she cited as her political inspiration, their relationship deteriorated in recent months after she criticised his foreign policy for being “America Last” and publicly campaigned for the release of the Epstein files.

Previously, she had supported Trump’s claims that the 2020 US Presidential election had been “stolen”

Greene said last week that the breakdown in relations with the White House had sparked threats of violence against her, and said that a pipe bomb threat had been sent to her construction company.

She wrote on X that Trump’s rhetoric “puts blood in the water and creates a feeding frenzy that could ultimately lead to a harmful or even deadly outcome”.

In response to news of her resignation, Trump told ABC News that it was “great news for the country”.

He added that he had not been informed of her decision. “Nah, it doesn’t matter, you know, but I think it’s great. I think she should be happy”, Trump said.

Meanwhile, Kentucky Republic Congressman Thomas Massie, who had collaborated on the bi-partisan effort to release the Epstein files, said he would miss Greene “tremendously”.

He wrote on X: “I’m very sad for our country but so happy for my friend Marjorie. I’ll miss her tremendously. She embodies what a true Representative should be”.

Other right-wing Maga figures, those who have steadfastly supported the President, criticised Greene for resigning ahead of the midterms.

Laura Loomer, a prominent right-wing activist, said on social media: “So she’s deliberately trying to make it so that Republicans are down a vote to screw Trump over ahead of 2026. She will probably get a deal with CNN or MSDNC to s***talk Trump all day throughout the midterms. She wants the Democrats to win.
