What to Watch For

The Bulls take on a shorthanded Heat team tonight in NBA Cup action. Billy Donovan’s club is 1-1 and in second place in East Group C. Miami is also 1-1, so tonight’s matchup goes a long way in deciding who stays alive in group play and who will ultimately fall out of contention to move on. Does the NBA Cup mean a lot? No. Would it be a cool and positive growing experience for them to advance to the knockout stage? I think so. Hopefully, the Bulls can take care of business at the UC. Coby White will either sit tonight or tomorrow night since he’s not yet playing back-to-backs. I’d imagine he would slot in tonight against Miami. First, even shorthanded, it’s a better opponent than Washington tomorrow night, and second, I do think the NBA Cup factors in slightly. Coby has looked really good thus far in two games back from his calf injury. This will be his first game at the United Center this season. I think tonight against a banged-up Heat team could equal a big game from him. As I mentioned, the Heat will be shorthanded, which is a nice break for the Bulls. No Tyler Herro, Andrew Wiggins, or Nikola Jovic for them tonight. Miami is coming off back-to-back wins over the Warriors and Knicks, and they’ve won three of their last five, with the third win coming over Cleveland. They’ve had a pretty rough schedule thus far, but then again, so have the Bulls. The Heat are expected to be a team competing with Chicago for a playoff or Play-In spot late in the year, so these games always feel a bit bigger.
